SOLD. Floralscape 2: Mauve and Yellow Irises

Oil painting on gallery-wrap canvas, 36” x 36” x 1.5”, ready to hang. A frame can be added. This second of my “floralscape” series has abstract and surreal qualities, reminiscent of the undulating forms and shapes of a windswept landscape, or the flowing skirts of a flamenco dancer. The viewer may see in it many other things, as the eye wanders throughout this larger-than-lifesize floral landscape.

Floralscape 4

Floralscape 1: Pink and Blue Irises

Oil on gallery-wrap canvas, 36” x 36” x 1.5”, ready to hang. A frame can be added. My Floralscapes are a recent, still growing series of large florals that have abstract and surreal qualities. They invite the viewer to wander visually through the scenes they present, like a landscape invites the viewer to imaginatively wander into their landforms. They might also seem reminiscent of a dancer’s swirling skirts, as these iris blooms suggest to me. Pinks and blues are such wonderful colours to paint in and so pleasant to view.

Tulipomania: Pale Pink Parrots
Tulipomania: Pale Pink Parrots

Oil on gallery-wrap canvas, 36” x 42” x 1.5” / 91.5 cm x 106.5 cm x 3.8 cm, ready to hang. Parrot tulips are a favourite subject of mine, due to their extraordinary shapes and patterning. ‘Tulipomania’, or ‘Tulip Mania’, refers to a phenomenal cultural period when Dutch and British elites collected tulips from Ottoman Turkish rulers. Paintings of them and other highly-prized flowers were far less expensive to purchase, and hence the botanical paintings of the Dutch Enlightenment also became hot collector’s items. I aim to allude to the opulence of and fascination with tulips in my Tulipomania series. This painting is available - please contact me with enquiries.

Tulipomania: Red and Yellow
Tulipomania: Red and Yellow

Oil on gallery-wrap canvas, 42” x 36” x 1.5”, ready to hang. A frame can be added. This abstract type composition was inspired by spring tulips in the parks around Chicago. Vivid swirls of red and yellow form petal shapes that merge into one another in an exuberant burst of life. ‘Tulipomania’, or ‘Tulip Mania’, refers to a time when collectors of exotic flora paid exorbitant prices to possess tulips. Tulipomania 7: Pink and Yellow Parrots
Tulipomania 7: Pink and Yellow Parrots

Soft pastels on museum-quality wooden board, 18” x 24” / 40.1 x 51 cm. The beautifully flowing shapes and patterns of these parrot tulips inspired this artwork. Flora presenting fluid lines and sculptural forms that lend an abstract quality to an artwork are of most interest to me. I found these tulips at the Chicago Botanic Garden. The series title ‘Tulipomania’ alludes to an era when collectors paid exorbitant prices for tulips. I hope my paintings portray something of the beauty of tulips that inspired such fascination in those long-ago enthusiasts!
