Mixed media watercolour and soft pastel on wood panel. I sell works in this media unframed, with instructions to frame under glass. This artwork was a preliminary to a large oil painting (also sold), but it is a complete piece in its own right. The first signs of the coming winter can be seen in the light snowfall that covers the ground. It is the end of the autumn season when the trees have only a few leaves left and the ground vegetation is withering away. The late afternoon sun illuminates the foliage, giving it a fiery quality against the cool blues of the snow and shadows.

The warm late afternoon sunlight highlights the trunks of almost leafless birch trees and creates a fiery effect in the ground foliage. The warm colours contrast with the cool blues and mauves of the snowfall.
